Did You Know – You Will Be Getting A New Medicare ID Card?

Have You Heard – You Will Be Getting A New Medicare ID Card?

You most likely have heard a least a little bit about this news. There are changes coming coming to beneficiaries of the Medicare health insurance program. You are going to get a New ID Card. Most of the information on your new card will still be the same. The one piece of information that is going to be completely new is:

Your ID Number

Right now, you have a Medicare ID number that is associated with either your or a spouse’s social security number. It has been decided that this number will be replaced with a completely different number.

Instead of your ID number being associated with a social security number, it is going to be a new randomly generated 11 digit number which is a combination of letters and numbers. It has been announced that sometime between April of 2018 and April of 2019, all Medicare beneficiaries will be receiving a new card.

Transition Period

During the transition period, you will be able to use either your old Medicare ID card or your new Medicare ID card. The transition period will continue until the end of 2019. Therefore, starting on January 1 2020, only the new Medicare ID cards can be used.

Why is this happening?

The primary reason for this change is to help protect against medical identity theft.

If you have any questions about this change or would like to speak to us about any of your Medicare needs in regards to Medicare supplement, Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plans, I would certainly be very happy to speak with you.

I am an independent agent specializing in the senior market. My services to you will always be free. I would be very happy to look at your current coverage and compare it to the marketplace to make sure that you are still getting a good value.
